Why Is My Heat Pump Not Cooling on Hot Days?
A heat pump may not cool on very hot days because high outdoor temperatures reduce its capacity and any airflow or refrigerant problem further limits heat transfer. The most common issues are dirty filters or coils that restrict airflow, low refrigerant from a leak, or incorrect thermostat mode. Electrical safeties can also slow or stop cooling if the outdoor unit overheats. In the Green Valley area, we often see sun-baked outdoor units with tight clearances that make heat rejection harder. If service is needed, the diagnostic fee is waived when we perform the repair.
Before you call, check these quick items:
- Confirm thermostat is set to Cool with fan on Auto, then drop the setpoint a few degrees.
- Replace a dirty filter and make sure supply and return vents are open.
- Clear debris from the outdoor coil and keep about two feet of space around it; call if you see ice, only warm air, or tripping breakers.
If the outdoor coil is iced or a breaker trips, turn the system off to prevent damage until a technician inspects it.
Updated: 2026-03-17
Need help in Green Valley, AZ?
